SOCIAREM

Solar Open Community Instruments for All Residents in Europe & the Mediterranean

SOCIAREM empowers citizens and communities by making renewable energy more accessible, understandable and participatory. Through digital tools and engagement strategies, the project helps users make informed decisions, improve energy literacy and benefit from fairer community energy models.

The project supports the shift toward cleaner energy systems by optimising photovoltaic performance and promoting smart self-consumption. The project aims to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and encourage more responsible use of natural resources by testing its solutions in real communities.

SOCIAREM develops advanced digital solutions to enhance solar energy adoption and enable peer-to-peer energy sharing. Its tools improve efficiency, flexibility and the integration of photovoltaic systems within real communities and local grids.

The project combines cutting-edge technologies such as AI, blockchain and real-time data management to build a smarter, more resilient and decentralised energy future

Vertical District Living Lab

A unique multi-use vertical district where SOCIAREM tests real-time optimisation, PV self-consumption strategies across residential, commercial, and high-load systems. The site demonstrates how complex buildings can evolve into smart, flexible energy ecosystems.

Cyprus Energy Community

A campus-scale REC integrating PV systems, battery storage, EV charging, and smart metering. SOCIAREM uses this living lab to validate real-time energy control, enhance grid performance, and engage thousands of users through digital tools.

Vila Nova & Barcelos REC

A community-wide pilot spanning two municipalities that tests blockchain-based P2P energy sharing, smart metering, and AI-driven user feedback. The site explores scalable business models and community engagement strategies for participatory energy markets.

Fondo Saccà Inclusive REC

A socially driven REC supporting low-income families and community facilities through PV, storage, and solar-thermal systems. SOCIAREM tests fair energy-distribution tools, federated data approaches, and engagement strategies focused on energy justice.

THE CONSORTIUM

SOCIAREM brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of 15 organisations from eight countries, coordinated by Comillas Pontifical University (Spain). The partnership includes universities, research centres, innovative SMEs and social organisations with expertise in renewable energy, data analytics, gamification, citizen engagement and community energy models. Together, the partners develop and validate digital tools, methodologies and technical solutions to support the adoption of photovoltaic systems and strengthen more inclusive, efficient and sustainable energy communities across Europe.
